I took part in a panel on digital transformation and artificial intelligence in Tunisia’s agriculture and fisheries sectors, held at the University of Tunis El Manar during the MENAfrica Digital Summit 2025.

We discussed what new technologies can do for fishers and farmers, what they mean for food and livelihood security, and why the traditional knowledge held in these sectors must be preserved rather than replaced. I drew on my work on digital tools in fisheries management and climate adaptation and made three points: tools have to be designed with the people who will use them, access to technology has to be equitable, and nothing works without close collaboration with rural communities.
